Childcare for the Yomim Noraim
Goal and Mission: It is our philosophy that a child should be happy in childcare. Therefore we have created a respectful, happy and positive environment for your children. If a child is unhappy we try to help them adapt, we try to accommodate, to console but if a child is expressing that he truly needs his Mom, Dad or guardian then we will come and get you. We thank you for your understanding and we are always here to speak with you about any matters that you wish to discuss. Ultimately, the way a child feels about shul will last a lifetime. We hope that one day when they look back at their days in shul they will remember them with joy and happiness.

Our well trained and experienced counselors will start the programming with davening, learning and kiddush. We continue our tradition of providing healthy snacks as in previous years. However if your child has special things they like to eat, or special requirements, allergies, we would recommend that you provide for them. Please also notify the child’s counselor if your child has allergies to certain foods.
**Playing Outside: there may be an opportunity to play in the Escovitz’ yard. The children would go over there in walking groups let by their caregivers. If you do not wish for your child to cross the street with the group and go and play outdoors then you must inform the counselor. We will leave them in your care during that time.
Safety and Respect: Childcare is a safe place for children to play and spend time with friends. Listening to the counselors is not just a way of showing Kavod but is necessary to keep your child safe. We would love your help in helping us explain ahead of time to your child that they are required to comply with the rules of the shul and must follow the caregiver, counselor or Director’s rules and instructions. Please remind them that chasing a friend, roughhousing, teasing or name calling, wrestling, ball playing(even mini super balls), throwing paper airplanes , Frisbees or pieces of chess, Othello etc. is not acceptable behavior in a shul. If a child is repeatedly unable to follow these guidelines then the responsibility of their supervision will be returned to their parents.
Health Concerns: Any child who is not feeling should not be brought to shul. If a child appears to be ill, coughing, cold etc we will ask the parent to come and care for them outside of childcare to protect the other children from infection. If they took a fever reducer to lower their temperature in the morning, it means they should not be in shul.
Special Circumstances: In the event of special events that have occurred recently for your child which may alter there usual behavior please let us know. (a birth in the family, a death or someone close etc. ) Sometimes children’s behavior can be affected and if we know we can give them some of the extra attention they may need.
Frequently asked questions
How long should my daughter/son stay in shul/childcare? This depends on your child. We believe that 4- 5 hours is a very long time for a child to stay in shul. It is a long time to expect them to behave properly. For some children it is appropriate but not for others. Though safe and experienced supervision is be available, we do ask that you consider what length of time is appropriate for your child. Only you know what really works for your child.
Do you change Diapers? All diaper changes are done by the parents, we will let you know.
Can my son/daughter come to shul alone if I want to go home to rest? Children must always be accompanied by an adult. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at shul. Children cannot be left in childcare while a parent goes home, to another shul for a shiur etc. This is for the safety and well being of the children. (Please consider that in the event of a real emergency only the parents or guardians can make medical decisions for the child)
Can my son or daughter leave shul leave shul by themselves? We do not allow children to go out of the shul unless you have given them permission. Please inform a counselor if this is your choice. We cannot have a child tell us “my Mom says it is okay”, we must hear it from you. We always want to make sure they are safe and that we know where they are. Your child’s safety and wellbeing is important to us.
Can he bring his special toy car or her special doll? Your child of course can bring a special toy or doll but if it is something fragile or expensive we advise it stays home as sometimes toys get lost or broken. Sometimes they need it to begin and then if you wish we could put it up on a shelf for safekeeping or return it to you. Please let us know.
Can I bring food for my child? We provide snacks but your child may require certain foods, if so please do bring them. We prefer that children not share food as everyone has different kashrut standards (chalav yisrael, yashan etc.), in addition some children have allergies. So we ask that food be given by parents and not be shared. Special candies often cause Jealousy for those who don’t have them and also pose a choking hazard. For this reason we prefer that these not be given to children in shul in the childcare rooms.
Can you give our child some medication? If your child requires an inhaler, allergy medication, antibiotics etc. please make sure to bring them and to administer them. We are not allowed to give your child any medications. If you let us know what time they need it we can come and get you.
Thank you so much for your cooperation. We thank you for bringing your children to us and we look forward to entertaining and enriching your children’s yamim tovim and to starting a wonderful new year with you all. Happy davening!
From all of us at Anshe Emes, I wish you a Shanna Tova U MetukA!, Tal, Childcare Director
